Poli-Sci

I need your help. For the last two weeks I have heard nothing but news about the Iowa Caucuses. Huckabee and Obama won, but what is a caucus? How does it work? Why does Kentucky have a caucus that doesn't matter? Why doesn't it matter? Who came up with the name "Caucus?" Why is it so fun to say "Caucuses?" Why isn't the plural called "Caucuii?" Iowa, seriously?

These are the questions I have. I need your help in getting them answered. Now don't go and look it up and then just answer from that....that's boring. I want answers off the top of your head. Colby Adams, I don't know if you even read this blog but I bet you could answer. Anyone else that knows please chime in. Points will be given for creativity.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's clueless. Though I have come to expect that if I don't know, then you don't know. HA!

so, nate, seeing how we have similar memories of lexington years ago (treasury drug, york steakhouse, etc), here's one for you...

Do you remember "Happy Hour"? It was a locally-produced children's show starring Happy the Clown and a puppet frog named "Froggy." It came on Channel 62 (before it became Channel 36). The show showed Tom & Jerry cartoons, Flash Gordon, etc.

(sorry to be so far off the subject of the post... i've been wondering about this for like a month)

Dave, Happy the Clown was my favorite. My mom sent in my name for the birthday club one time. He wished me happy birthday on the air. It is still one of my all time favorite memories. I had a Kermit the Frog puppet that I would pretend was Froggy. That's when Tv was real.

Misty, you would be amazed by all the things that I don't know.

that's awesome. it's rare that i find someone who remembers happy hour. i loved that show... watched it every afternoon. then, one day, happy was gone, replaced by "Happy 2". it was never the same. (useless piece of trivia: Happy 2 was somehow related to anthony/tony willis [aka "biggie"]... an uncle or something, as i recall).

I started to mention the Tony Wills connection but I wasn't sure. They even tried to revive channel 62 for a short while a few years back. Somewhere I have a 45 record with the theme song to happy hour on it.

Nathan,

Long overdue, but I just now saw the post. Basically a caucus is a system in which a group of people gather in their community and cast their vote for their candidate. After the first round of voting candidates who do not receive 15 percent of the vote are considered "non-viable" and their supporters are then free to support other candidates. At that point supporters of other candidates proceed to lure the uncommitted supporters. After this round a final count is taken and the candidate with the most supporters is the "winner" of that caucus. Delegates are awarded based on the proportion of supporters.
